About the Art

What thrills me about my process is the element of spontaneity and the electricity when unveiling the print off the press. I create principally black and white linocuts from linoleum printed on paper though a number of the pieces use Chine Colle to infuse a splash of color. Some prints introduce a reflected image by printing on translucent mulberry paper. In composing predominantly black and white prints a distortion or harshness may direct an image, so retaining a commanding composition is critical for the work. Countless hours have been spent considering what to cut out as white and what to print black. Eliminating most tonal values presents the challenge to find a balance that guarantees the vision is readable and tells a story.
I like to stumble upon ideas from everyday life places or events. I develop my images from live models, photographs and the imagination. Finding grace, dignity or humor in scenes familiar in our lives can be touching and nourishing to the soul. It is my hope that a common thread will resonate with viewers that might open a discussion leading in many directions. My goal is to offer people occasions to recognize a moment that could add to understanding people in the world.
